(en)noble (de)base
digital video 15:36, in collaboration with Will Haughery, 2011.
The six “sequences” in (en)noble (de)base (labeled individually as spit, piss, gag, shit, fuck, tears) comprise the dominant gesture of each video segment. This dominant gesture is our performance. It is where we approach one another as characters enacting (mostly for the first time) a proscribed gesture planned days or weeks prior to filming. Each of these dominant gestures is the reason we find ourselves together on the stage of this space (a self-conscious studio separated by a slight modification in tone). In addition to these dominant moments, we have left in tact a variety of residual gestures as they provide a trace of our naturalistic interactions outside of the performance. These lingering moments enact a path guiding both performer and viewer beyond the stage (drywall space-cum-video screen) towards everyday existence. They transport us into the moment taking place between you and I right now. The performance, enacted privately between two individuals and revealed to others via the intervention of the camera, finds in these ephemeral gestures, a potentiality extending beyond the brief moment of performance.
